BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatments

BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments are available at Turner Medical Arts in Santa Barbara, California, for women who prefer a nonsurgical approach to facial rejuvenation from a trusted, experienced healthcare provider. BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable prescription medication that renders specific dynamic facial muscles inactive, thereby minimizing the appearance of wrinkles caused when those muscles contract. The overall effect on facial appearance is a smoothing, calming one, helping patients look rested, relaxed, and rejuvenated.

Treatment with FDA–approved BOTOX® Cosmetic involves a simple 15–minute office procedure and no downtime. The medication is most commonly administered to treat lines and wrinkles in the following facial areas :

  • Vertical frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow's feet around the outer eye corners
  • Forehead wrinkles or creases
  • Vertical lines on the upper lip
  • Prominent jaw muscles

Common BOTOX® Indications for Santa Barbara Patients

In spite of the more than 20 clinically proven indications for BOTOX®, our Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, and San Luis Obispo patients request BOTOX® Cosmetic primarily to smooth wrinkles and creases between the eyebrows, across the forehead, around the eyes, or surrounding the lips. These wrinkles are caused by years of smiling, laughing, frowning—the simple act of expressing ourselves through nonverbal communication.

This kind of communication involves dynamic facial muscles, or those used for movement, which contract when we make any facial expression. Although these repetitive contractions can eventually lead to deep creases, deactivating specific facial muscles can virtually erase the most bothersome lines. And although BOTOX® Cosmetic is mainly used to smooth existing wrinkles, younger women now use it to prevent against future wrinkles and creases.

The most experienced BOTOX® injectors also have the skill to subtly raise the outer tip of the eyebrows, resulting in what is known as a "nonsurgical brow lift." In this advanced application of BOTOX, the medication is administered to relax the specific facial muscles that pull the eyebrow down so that the muscles that pull the brow up can function unopposed. A nonsurgical brow lift can open the eye area and create a more youthful, relaxed visage.

What to Expect from the Procedure

BOTOX® in our Santa Barbara office is administered using precision and utmost care. After discussing your concerns and carefully analyzing your unique facial features and underlying muscle structure, your licensed nurse practitioner will create a treatment plan specifically for you. Often the first treatment requires more medication than repeat injections, which she will explain to you in detail.

Botox

Your nurse practitioner will begin by applying a numbing anesthetic cream to the injection site. Next, she will carefully inject BOTOX® into each target muscle using an ultra–thin needle, which can reduce pain and decrease the potential for bruising.

Because treatments require no downtime, many of our BOTOX® patients from Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, and San Luis Obispo schedule this simple office procedure during their lunch hour. Patients typically begin to notice the benefits from BOTOX® within a few days after treatment. Complete results take up to two weeks to appear, and they last three to six months in most individuals.

BOTOX® Aftercare Instructions

Immediately after treatment, you may wash your face and apply make up as usual. You will be advised to keep your head upright for at least six hours and avoid massaging the area for 24 to 48 hours. To minimize potential swelling or redness at the injection site, refrain from strenuous exercise, extensive sun or heat exposure, and alcoholic beverages for 24 hours. You may conceal with makeup any residual redness at the injection site. To minimize swelling, periodically apply a cold compress for the first day or two following treatment.

Many patients who continue to use BOTOX® find that follow–up treatments require less medication, and the interval between treatments can often extend from three months to as long as six.

BOTOX® Safety and Risks

The Food and Drug Administration first approved BOTOX® for cosmetic use in 2002. Since then, it has been administered approximately 30 million times worldwide, with an impressive safety record. Even so, for safe and optimal results, it is extremely important to select an experienced, trusted healthcare professional to perform the injections.

Doing so can help prevent adverse side effects. Although extremely rare, they can include migration into unintended muscles. If this does occur, prescription medications often help reverse the effects. If not, the results are not permanent. During your consultation for BOTOX®at our Santa Barbara office, you will have a chance to discuss your safety concerns and ask any questions prior to your procedure.
