What Causes Vaginal Laxity and Dryness?
Many of the symptoms Radiofrequency treats stem from the childbirth or aging processes. Multiple vaginal childbirths, or even a single notably strenuous one, can cause tissues to loosen and not tighten back into their pre-baby size and shape.
Pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period are also known for triggering hormone fluctuations, which can contribute to additional unwelcome vaginal changes. Later in life, changes brought about by menopause can be another culprit behind worsening vaginal conditions. As estrogen levels drop, vaginal walls can thin and dry out, possibly becoming inflamed.
The combination of physical trauma and chemical imbalances can be particularly damaging to a woman's sense of self and sexual satisfaction, given that the discomfort and pain that result from dry conditions and easily irritable tissues can transform formerly romantic and pleasurable intimate encounters into scenarios to be avoided.
What Can Radiofrequency Treat?
Youthful vaginal tissues are tight and supportive, but childbirth and atrophy can lead to a variety of problems, including vulvovaginal laxity, which may reduce sensation during intercourse. A loss of firmness can also weaken internal bladder support, leading to incontinence in the form of leakage or the involuntary release of urine when coughing, sneezing, or laughing.
All of this can be treated by ThermiVa®.
Specifically, the makers of these technologies report that treatments are intended to focus on addressing vulvar laxity, vaginal dryness, moderate stress incontinence, and certain sexual dysfunction that can be helped by stronger muscle contractions and increased sensitivity due to thickened vaginal walls and more moisture.
Radio frequency also addresses labial laxity by tightening tissues and prompting labia that have sagged to contract. This effect is of particular interest to women who find that they are unable to wear bikinis or tight clothing due to the appearance of loose labia.
These are effective, nonsurgical treatments performed in a physician's office, not requiring any preparation, anesthesia, or post-procedure down time. The main component is a hand piece that precisely delivers heat powered by a radiofrequency generator. Patients can expect the treatment session to last about half an hour.
Some results are immediately appreciable and will continue to improve over a few weeks time after a treatment session, but a series of three treatments is recommended to achieve ideal results with Thermiva which last from nine months to longer than a year.
How Does Radiofrequency Work?
This a tried and trusted technology: warming tissue through radiofrequency electrical current. The current generates heat, which can be carefully and gently applied to the soft tissues of the vulva and vagina, causing them to contract. This creates a tighter passageway and strengthens the area. The heat energy also encourages collagen production.
Why is Collagen Important for Vaginal Health?
Collagen is found all throughout the body, from your skin to your bones. The plentiful protein is responsible for giving various anatomical structures their strength and suppleness by serving as both a connective tissue and support system.
In the skin, collagen provides a consistent shape and works with other elements to create an elastic framework that retains moisture and a satisfying thickness. This is particularly important in the vaginal area, where tissue drying out makes intercourse an uncomfortable or even painful experience.
Unfortunately, aging bodies produce less and less collagen as time goes by, and its departure from the body can be hastened by destructive environmental factors such as pollution, smoking, and ultraviolet radiation.
Heat can rejuvenate existing collagen. If properly stimulated, as with the radiofrequency energy, targeted tissues can also begin a process known as neocollagenesis, which is the formation of all-new collagen.
Do I Have More Options?
When it comes to your vaginal health and comfort, you always have choices, whether you are looking for a cosmetic change or a medically necessary procedure. As noted above, MonaLisa Touch® is another nonsurgical rejuvenation option. This treatment utilizes laser energy, as opposed to the radiofrequency energy of ThermiVa® and Viveve System.
Labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation surgery are available for women seeking a longer lasting option than nonsurgical remedies provide. Women suffering from complications beyond basic laxity issues, including a prolapsed bladder or rectum, can receive vaginal reconstruction. You can also ask the Turner Medical Arts team about hormone replacement therapy and what taking that route could do for you and your vaginal health, as well as how it can combine with surgery for ideal results.
Vaginal dissatisfaction is a very personal issue, which is why Dr. Turner treats every case with care, compassion, and discretion, working with each woman to develop a solution that works best for her.
