I grew up in the hills of East Tennessee, having fun as a rebellious Boy Scout, the son a of PhD physicist turned preacher. I was educated in the big city, going to both college and medical school at Emory University in Atlanta GA. I then trained as an ophthalmologist at the Jules Stein Eye Institute of UCLA, afterward going straight into private practice in Bakersfield CA, where I performed several thousand eye surgeries. I decided to retire from that after 10 years and turned it over to my brother, who is a world-renowned lens implant surgeon.
It was at this point I began to channel my creative energies into founding three new organizations: (1) Montecito Aesthetic Institute in Santa Barbara CA, (2) a medical management company (which the partners refer to affectionately as “Chewbacca”), and (3) a nonprofit eye clinic called Advanced Center for Eyecare, which has won numerous awards, raises millions of dollars annually and is now serving as a model to serve the underserved in other communities.
I then semi-retired again, simplified, and now see patients a few days a week doing solely cosmetic eyelid surgery and aesthetic facial injections, i.e., BOTOX and fillers. I love spending as much time as possible with my 5 daughters, and love to travel and share experiences with colleagues in the medical aesthetics field.
But if the Atlanta Braves or Alabama Crimson Tide are playing, you will have to wait to be seen ;-).
After graduating valedictorian from high school in Knoxville, TN, I obtained my undergraduate and medical degrees from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. I then completed my residency in Ophthalmology at UCLA’s esteemed Jules Stein Eye Institute. My experience and credentials are listed below:
