Eyelid Surgery

People who develop droopy eyelids due to genetics or age may find this surgery necessary for cosmetic reasons.

Eyelid surgery is often viewed as the go-to solution for those dealing with vision complications and a drowsy appearance. Additionally, people who have droopy eyelids are often more prone to experiencing allergy and edema symptoms. If unaddressed, these symptoms can worsen through exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, and other potential allergens. If you’re struggling with vision problems, aesthetic concerns, or frequent allergies, eyelid surgery may be the answer. At Turner Medical Arts, we have the equipment and professional staff needed to ensure you have the best surgical outcome possible.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

When it comes to deciding whether or not surgery is necessary, it’s important to consider your desired results. People who develop droopy eyelids due to genetics or age may find this surgery necessary for cosmetic reasons. Those suffering from medical reasons may be attracted by the functional benefits of the procedure instead. Common medical reasons for trying eyelid surgery include difficulty wearing glasses, irritation, and forehead discomfort. If you have a hard time with these issues, this simple surgical procedure can provide you with the results you seek.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure

A typical procedure can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. The surgery involves making incisions in the upper eyelid crease and right beneath the lashes or behind the lower eyelid. After making the necessary incisions, Dr. Chang will use glue or sutures to carefully piece back your skin. In some cases, a CO2 laser may be used for resurfacing skin in order to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Incisions to elevate the eyebrows may be needed as well. The surgery usually takes between 1-2 hours to complete and usually doesn’t result in hospital care or extensive downtime. Scarring from eyelid surgery is minimal as the skin of the eyelid heals exceptionally quickly.

Expected Surgery Results

After your eyelid surgery, you may experience some swelling and soreness for 5-7 days. Once the swelling diminishes, you should be able to resume your normal activities. Using a topical antibiotic ointment during the healing process is advised to prevent infections. Applying cold packs and warm compresses can help reduce swelling and speed up recovery. As your eyes heal, mild discomfort will be felt, but prescription medication is rarely needed for pain management and a standard non-prescription pain reliever should help. You can expect to see full results in several weeks following the surgery.
