Labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure that may be performed on its own or with vaginal surgery. It aims to change the shape and size of the labia, or vaginal “lips,” making them appear smaller or more symmetrical. The surgery can be done on the outer lips (labia majora), the inner lips (labia minora), or both.
Dr. Turner feels that any woman who experiences discomfort or embarrassment because of her labia is a strong candidate for labiaplasty. Many women opt for the procedure because childbirth, illness, an injury, or aging have caused changes in the look or feel of their labia. The labia may be stretched out, for example, or uneven. Most commonly, patients either have a congenital irregularity or one that appeared during puberty, or they are post-menopausal or experience labia changes due to significant weight loss.
Through labiaplasty, Dr. Turner aims to boost a woman’s self-confidence and promote improved sexual satisfaction by creating the look and shape she desires. Other goals may be a more youthful genital appearance, improved comfort during sexual activity or exercise, or the ability to comfortably wear tight-fitting clothes such as a swimsuit.
Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure typically performed under general anesthesia. Small cuts are made to trim any excesses and reshape the labia. Dr. Turner carefully places the incisions so that resulting scars aren’t obvious. Patients can expect to return to work within 2-3 days of surgery, resume exercise in 3-4 weeks and resume all sexual activity after about 6 weeks.
If you desire tightening or reshaping of your vagina and your labia, you may benefit from having labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation at the same time. Dr. Turner frequently performs these complementary procedures together with excellent results. Pairing the procedures allows you to bypass the need for two surgeries and two exposures to anesthesia. You may also appreciate having only one bout of recovery time.
